Enrollment for a MATH course is a three-step process:

1. Math Placement Examination
2. Select the Math Course
3. Advisor Review

1. Math Placement Examination (MPE)

  • All Freshmen Connection students must take the MPE regardless of whether they enroll for a math course in the fall semester.
  • For additional information on the MPE, or to take the MPE on-line, please click here.

2. Select the Math Course

Math courses at Maryland are tied to specific majors. Do not enroll in a math course unless that course specifically fits your major.

  • Determine the College or School of your intended major. Click here for a list of all college majors.
  • Determine the math course that fits your intended major track. Click here to access the Math Tracks Sheet.
  • Select the math course that fits your intended major track.
  • For certain majors—College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences and A. James Clark School of Engineering—MATH course enrollment is based solely on MPE scoring and not earned SAT or Advanced Placement scores.

3. Advisor Review

  • We’ll review your Freshmen Connection enrollment form to ensure that your math course selection is at a level appropriate to your MPE score and college/major requirements.
  • If there are any concerns, you’ll be contacted for an advising session, to take place either on-campus or via telephone.

Re-taking the MPE

You’ll have the option of re-taking the MPE after 30 days have passed. You’ll only be able to retake the MPE once before the beginning of the fall semester. In the event you do not place into your preferred math course even after taking a retest, you are strongly encouraged to enroll in the following review course:

  • MATH003 Developmental Mathematics: For students who plan to take MATH110, MATH111, MATH113, MATH115, or STAT100.
